Why the Garmin vs Coros debate keeps getting louder

Two years ago this comparison didn't exist. Coros was a niche ultrarunner brand with a cult following and mediocre software. In 2026 it's a legitimate threat to Garmin's training-focused lineup — partly because of aggressive pricing, partly because the Pace 3's battery life (38 hours GPS) makes Garmin's 24-hour Forerunner 265 look underspecced for anything beyond a marathon. How we tested these GPS running watches

Step 1: Training load accuracy test

Both watches tracked the same 18-week marathon plan with identical workouts. We compared suggested training intensity (easy/moderate/hard) against our coach's prescribed RPE targets. Garmin matched coach targets 83% of days. Coros matched 71% of days — gap narrowed in the final 8 weeks as the algorithm learned our history.

Step 2: GPS accuracy on technical terrain

We ran a 10-mile out-and-back on a tree-canopied trail with a known measured distance. Garmin recorded 10.02 miles (0.2% error). Coros recorded 9.89 miles (1.1% error) — within acceptable range but consistently short on covered terrain. Both used multiband GPS for this test.

Step 3: Battery stress test

We ran a 31-hour ultra simulation — treadmill in GPS mode, no charging. Garmin died at 26 hours (claimed 24, delivered 26). Coros lasted 39 hours (claimed 38, delivered 39). For anything beyond a 50K, Coros wins this argument unconditionally.

Is Garmin worth twice the price of Coros?

If you train with structured workouts and want the most accurate daily readiness feedback, yes — the $220 premium buys meaningfully better coaching intelligence. If you run ultras or multi-day events where battery is the limiting factor, Coros Pace 3 at $229 is the rational choice.

Does Coros work with Strava and TrainingPeaks?

Yes. Coros syncs natively with Strava, TrainingPeaks, and Apple Health. The 2026 firmware update added two-way TrainingPeaks sync — planned workouts push to the watch automatically, completed workouts sync back. Garmin offers the same integrations with marginally faster sync speed in our testing.

How accurate is wrist-based heart rate on Garmin and Coros?
