What to avoid in runner strength training

Heavy barbell squats with bilateral stance: builds quad dominance without the single-leg stability that running requires. Crunches and sit-ups: running core stability is anti-rotation, not flexion — planks and dead bugs transfer; sit-ups don't. HIIT classes on strength days: the cardiovascular stress of HIIT competes with running adaptation — use dedicated sessions for each modality.

When should runners start strength training in their season?

Begin strength training in the base building phase — 16+ weeks before target race.
