Four ultrarunners. Thirty long runs each. One pack earned unanimous re-purchase intent. Here's which one and what it does differently.

Best running hydration pack editors pick — ultrarunner taking soft flask from vest on trail

The running hydration pack our ultrarunners kept reaching for across 120 combined long runs is the Salomon Active Skin 12 ($160) — no bounce, accessible front pockets, and a fit system that adjusts for both racing weight and training weight without refit.

What makes an ultrarunner's pack different from a trail runner's pack

Distance runners have one non-negotiable requirement that recreational trail runners rarely encounter: the pack must feel identical at mile 2 and mile 42. Pack fit that works when fresh loosens with muscle fatigue and body fluid loss. Bounce that's unnoticeable at 9:00/mile becomes unbearable at race pace after 30 miles. We tested seven packs over 120 combined long runs (20 miles minimum each) with four ultrarunner editors. Two packs failed from bounce alone. One failed from shoulder strap pressure after 25 miles. The Salomon Active Skin 12 was the only pack all four editors recommended for runs over 30 miles. For sizing guidance on how much capacity you actually need, see our [hydration vest capacity guide](/running-hydration-vest-size-guide).

The three packs that made our shortlist

Pack 1: Salomon Active Skin 12 ($160) — Editors' pick

Stretch mesh body conforms to torso shape and maintains fit through muscle volume changes over long efforts. Two 500ml front soft flasks accessible without breaking stride (tested at 6:30/mile pace). 12-liter total storage: sufficient for 50-mile mandatory gear requirements on most races. Pole attachment system for technical terrain. Weight empty: 280g. Runs slightly small; size up one if between sizes.

Pack 2: Ultimate Direction Ultra Vest 6.0 ($160) — Best for narrower builds

Four front pocket configuration (two flasks, two zippered) beats Salomon for organization but bounces 15% more in our test on technical descent. Narrower shoulder strap spacing fits runners with less than 16-inch shoulder width more securely. 6-liter capacity — adequate for 50K, tight for 50-mile mandatory gear lists. Weight empty: 280g.

Pack 3: Nathan VaporKrar 4L ($100) — Best budget for 50K distance

At $100, the best value for 50K racing. 4-liter storage limits mandatory gear capacity but handles most aid-station-supported 50Ks comfortably. Bounce rating: 3/10 at race pace (adequate, not excellent). Two front flasks. No trekking pole attachment. Best for: well-supported 50K races where aid is every 5–6 miles.

How do you fit a running hydration vest to eliminate bounce?

Three-step fit process: (1) Load the vest to race weight before fitting — empty packs fit differently than full ones. (2) Tighten sternum straps until the vest sits flat against your chest; most runners under-tighten. (3) Run 100 meters at race pace and check for vertical bounce at the top of each stride. If the pack lifts more than 1cm from your back on each footstrike, tighten the side adjustment straps by one notch. Repeat until bounce is under 1cm.

What should you carry in a running pack for a 50-miler?

Mandatory gear varies by race, but our standard 50-mile carry: 1.5 liters water (500ml per flask, 500ml bladder), emergency foil blanket (50g), headlamp with spare battery, waterproof jacket (150g shell), first aid kit (blister pads, tape, ibuprofen), phone and emergency contact card. Total weight: 1.8–2.2kg loaded. Choose your pack size by this number, not by distance alone.

How do you stop a hydration pack from smelling?

Wash after every long run — sweat salt in the mesh causes permanent odor after 3–5 unwashed uses. Fill soft flasks with 1:10 bleach solution, shake, and rinse after runs in heat. Air dry completely before storage — roll the pack open and hang it in airflow, not flat on a shelf. For deep odor removal after neglect: soak mesh in white vinegar solution (1:5) for 30 minutes, rinse thoroughly, air dry.
